Telephone Preference Service
The Telephone Preference Service, known as TPS, is the UK's sole official 'Do Not Call' register for both landline and mobile numbers. It provides a valuable service for individuals and businesses alike, enabling them to opt out of receiving unsolicited live sales and marketing calls. Registering a telephone number with the TPS is a straightforward process that is both free and quick.
Once a number is registered, it significantly reduces the amount of unwanted sales and marketing calls received. This service extends to businesses as well, through the Corporate Telephone Preference Service, or CTPS. This ensures that businesses can also benefit from a reduction in unsolicited calls, providing a more efficient and less interrupted working environment.
The TPS and CTPS are not just services, but they are also backed by legal requirements. Under the Privacy and Electronic (EC Directive) Regulations 2003, organisations are legally obligated to refrain from calling any number registered with the TPS or CTPS.
In the UK, the enforcement of this law falls under the jurisdiction of the Information Commissioner’s Office. This office holds the power to impose fines on firms that violate the law, ensuring that the rights of individuals and businesses to avoid unwanted calls are protected.
